Hair Salon

For the convenience of persons living at Nakile. A beauty parlor is centrally located, has reasonable rates partly funded by the Home, is open one day per week, and is staffed by a qualified cosmetologist.

Church Services

Yarmouth County Ministerial services and Catholic Churches within the municipality provide spiritual services. A Catholic Mass is celebrated once a month. Roman Catholic churches from the surrounding communities offer a Holy Communion service each Friday and Sunday morning. Church groups from the area hold a worship service twice monthly on Sunday afternoon. Other services include Sacrament of the Sick, Novenas, and Rosary and Bible Studies.

Dietary Department

Our main responsibility is to meet the nutritional needs of our residents by providing them with a well-balanced, attractive, and appetizing meal. A qualified dietitian conducts a nutritional assessment on admission. Dietary evaluations and education are ongoing to ensure the effectiveness of proper nutrition and to aim for satisfaction of each person. A certified cook and trained dietary aides staff the department. Meal hours are 8:30.a.m. 11:30a.m. and 4:30p.m. We encourage everyone to eat in the dining room.  
 
Any special foods brought from home must be placed in disposable containers that are labelled with the resident’s name, contents of the container, and date. Limited quantities may be brought in at a time as the food items can only be stored for two days, then will be disposed of. Food items must be taken directly to the main kitchen and given to dietary staff. Dietary staff are responsible for proper storage of these items. Non-perishable food items that are individually packaged may be stored in the resident’s room unless if determined by dietary/housekeeping/nursing staff that this food is best kept elsewhere.

A member of our Nakile family is allergic to shellfish, including crustaceans (lobster, crab, shrimp, etc.) and mollusks (scallops, oysters, clams, mussels, etc.).  As your loved ones have the right to enjoy special treats, we’d appreciate your help reducing the risk to our Nakile family member by alerting nursing staff when bringing shellfish into Nakile. The nursing staff will need to know whether shellfish is being consumed during your visit or if the prepared meal will be warmed and served to your loved one in the dining room by the dietary staff later.If the Dietary staff is present, please bring the meal directly to the main kitchen after you alert a nursing staff member. If dietary staff are not present, the nursing staff will bring the meal to the kitchen for you.

Families are welcome to book rooms for special events that may involve outside food being brought into the facility to be shared with your loved ones. Please call Nakile to discuss.

Environmental Services

Housekeeping and laundry services are available seven days a week. Personal laundry is done on site. Each item of clothing must be labeled, preferably prior to admission in order to avoid misplaced clothing items. See the Environmental Service staff for details. Machine-washable and dryer-safe clothing is recommended.

Nursing Department

Nakile is staffed by a Registered Nurse twenty-four hours a day. A licensed Practical Nurse provides care on day and evening shifts. Nursing staff are Continuing Care Assistants who have completed training and successfully passed provincial examinations. Nursing care is planned through care plan meetings with all departments. Family members and persons living at Nakile are encouraged to attend care plan meetings whenever possible. They consist of an initial meeting within 6 weeks of admission and then annually. You may have questions regarding some aspects of care from time to time, nursing staff may be contacted at any time by calling Nakile.

Therapeutic Recreation Department

Recreation staff is scheduled five days a week. The recreation staff aims to provide top quality, daily recreation and leisure programs suited to meet the unique needs, interests and abilities of all persons living at Nakile. Leisure assessments are completed on all persons living at Nakile to determine individual recreational needs planning for intellectual, social, spiritual and physical programs. The programs are meaningful and designed to improve the quality of life.

Rehabilitation Services

A consultant Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist are available to assess and plan care for special needs. A physiotherapy assistant visits Nakile twice weekly to work with the persons living at Nakile.

Resident Council

The residents elect a President, Vice President and Treasurer to conduct monthly meetings. Persons living in the home receive and share input into recreational activities. They discuss common issues and make their suggestions known. They bring concerns regarding issues pertaining to the Home to share with the staff. They plan fund-raising events with assistance from Recreation staff and manage their fund-raising money.
